Windelband and relativism. -- Prof. Gerald Hartung (Wuppertal) gave us an intriguing talk on this topic on Thursday. His argued that while Windelband had defended a cultural relativism in 1875, he had turned his coat by 1882. Hartung did not discuss Köhnke’s thesis according to which the change of heart had something to do with the assassination attempt on the life of the emperor in 1878. (I am more inclined to think that the main cause was the influx of physiologists into philosophy departments starting in the mid-seventies).
